Whale diet or science?

29 May 2007

I wont go into the wrong of whaling, I am pretty sure that most know that it is a barbaric act of carnivorism. There is no need to eat it. There are plenty of other staples in a predomnantly seafood diet, that you can prevent eating a species with dwindling numbers. It’s not like they are a farmed animal. Their existance is finite.

Last year around 5500 tonnes of whale meat were brought in to Japan from the country’s “scientific” whaling operations. According to the country’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Japan had 4590 tonnes of whale meat in cold storage at the end of March this year. One year earlier it had a stockpile of 3610 tonnes and in March 1999 it had 648 tonnes.

Now one of Japan’s largest restaurant chains is offering raw whale meat on its set menu year round. It seems that now, because there is so much whale meat, that it’s more affordable for regular menus, and not a delicacy, including schools.

I found it strange that a country so spiritually & technically advanced, is having such a hard time with the concept of protecting our whales!
